2015

  • Linnaeus – Palme Scholarship Exchange Programme between our Department and the Lund University in Sweden has begun. Under this programme , two students from the Swedish University have joined the Department in September.
  • Two students from our Department and a faculty member will go to Lund University, Sweden shortly.
  • Univ Voice & Kalari, two practice journals of our Department were published regularly, in addition to their online editions.
  • This year’s award instituted in memory of the renowned journalist P.C.Sukumaran Nair was received by Col.P.T.Rajiv, a student of the last batch presently working as a Colonel in the Indian Army.
  • Nineteen students from the fourth semester MCJ batch did two months’ training in various media organisations as part of their course. They did internship in media organisations like ‘The Times of India’,‘Mathrubhumi’, ‘Kerala Kaumudi’, ‘Deshabhimani’, ‘Kairali TV’ and IPRD
  • Organised Television News Production Workshop under the guidance of seasoned TV journalists.
  • The Communication Club of the Department organised seminars, talks and debates every week to foster the communication skills of the students.
  • On every working day the students produced the ‘News Today’, a daily newspaper using the facilities in the computerised media lab.
  • Take 3, a mega media fest was organised for two days on the campus in January 2015.Students from different media institutions in the State participated.

2014

  • The department installed the state of the art technology for non-linear editing (I Mac 10) in its digitised Media Lab
  • MCJ students produced four news documentaries on various themes using the video-production facilities available in the department.
  • The department and Lund University in Sweden have jointly submitted the proposal for exchange and students under the Linnaeus-Palme scholarship programme between the two Universities
  • The practice journals of the department, both in English and Malayalam are now available online in addition to the print editions
  • This year’s award instituted in memory of the renowned journalist Sri. P.S Sukumaran Nair was received by Ms. Sruthy Gopal, a student of the last batch, presently working as a journalist in a national newspaper

  • Organised a workshop on Television news Production under the guidance of seasoned TV journalists. Individual TV news programmes were produced and presented by the students who attended the workshop
  • As the Department is subscribing the Press Trust of India, the major news agency in the country, students could produce the “News Today” on workings days using the facilities in the Media Lab

2013


1.The National Press Day was celebrated by the Department on November 16 by organising a symposium on ‘The Changing Media Landscape’. The key speaker was Mr. Andreas Mattson, from the Dept of Media and Journalism, Lund University, Sweden.
2. Dr. Anna Lind Berg, Chairperson of the Swedish South Asian Network (SASNET) and a team of Swedish scholars visited the Department and held discussions with the faculty.
3. Award for the Best Journalism student in the University instituted in memo of the first Head of the Department, Prof. Maxwell Fernandez was given to Ms.Meera Manu, a former student of the Department Presently, she is a journalist working with ‘The New Indian Express.’
4. Dr.M.S. Harikumar and Ms. Maggie J. Asst. Professors of the Department participated in the international conference on ‘On line Newspaper archiving’ organized by the SAARC Documentation Centre, New Delhi on Dec 2-6 2012.
5. The Department brought out the special issue of ‘Spot Light’ on the occasion of the International Film Festival of Kerala, held in DEC 26, 2013.
6. Students from the Department were selected to work in the Media Centre of International Film Festival of Kerala.
7. Prominent TV channels and national newspapers conducted campus recruitment and selected students from the department as journalist trainees. Several students got placements in prestigious media organizations.
8. A National Media Fest was organized by the department in September at Vylopalli Samskriti Bhavan, Trivandrum. Seminars and talent tests were held as part of the Fest. The Fest was marked by participation from various Universities.

13. Dr.M.S.Harikumar, Asst. Professor has published an article titled ‘Ace communicator and Journalist’ in —VIDURA- a journal published by the Press Institute of India, New Delhi (July- Sept 2013)
14. Dr.M.S.Harikumar, Asst.Professor has represented the University of Kerala at the Consortium meet of EMINTE (Erasmus Mundus India to Europe scholarship Program) held at Lund University in Sweden in September 2013. He made a detailed presentation on the efforts of University of Kerala in promoting international collaborations and exchange at the academic sphere. He also visited the Department of Communication Sciences in Amsterdam University, Netherlands and Freie University of Berlin, Germany and held discussions with their international relations authorities for future academic collaborations.
15. Twenty students from the fourth Semester MCJ course underwent two month internship in New Indian Express, Deccan Herald, Times of India, Mathrubhumi, Kerala Kaumudi, Deepika & Madhyamam.
16. This year’s P.C. Sukurnaran Nair award for Journalism was received by Annu Mathew, a former student now working as Sub-Editor in Times of India.
17. A study on ‘Media’s role in addressing environmental issues’ carried out by Dr. Subash Kuttan was published by the Centre for Media Studies, Delhi.
18. Prof.P.V.Yaseen of the Department presented a paper on ‘Mandatory creation of the Human free zones amidst the Human Habitations on earth’ at the International Conference ECOCASD 2013 in October organized by the University of Kerala in collaboration with Ambo University, Ethiopia.
19. Mr. M. V. Thomas was awarded Ph.D in Journalism for his work on ‘The Role of Malayalam newspapers in the Freedom Movement’ conducted under the guidance of Dr. Subash Kuttan.

 


2012

  1. Award for the Best Investigative Journalist in the state instituted in memory of the first Head of the dept, Prof. Maxwell Fernandez was given away in July at a function in Trivandrum.The award was instituted by Dr.Sheeba Fernandez, the sister of Prof. Maxwell Fernandez. Mr. Vinoy Mathew, Chief Sub editor of Mathrubhumi was the first recipient of the award. Mr. Athul Lal , Senior Reporter with the New Indian Express and a former student of the dept also received a special jury award.
  2. The National Press Day was celebrated by the dept on November 1 6.A national seminar was organized jointly with the information and Public Relations Dept.,Govt. of Kerala and the Alumni Association. Eminent media personalities participated in the seminar on the Emerging Trends in Media world.
  3. Prominent Television channels and newspapers conducted campus recruitment in the dept in this year also Asianet, Surya TV and Reporter TV selected students from the dept as journalist trainees by way of this. Also students got placements in Times of India, the largest circulated news paper in the country.
  1. 4. Full Bright Fellowship programme with Yale University in USA continued in 2012.
  1. As part of the course, all students of the fourth semester MCJ batch underwent two months training in various newspapers like New Indian Express, Mathrubhumi Malayala Manorama , Kerala Kaumudi etc.
  2. Three-day Media Fest was organised on July 6, 7 and 8 by the Communication Club of the dept in collaboration with IPRD and C-DIT at Trivandrum. Seminars, talent tests and photo exhibition were held as part of the Fest. Nearly 150 journalism students from different universities and colleges attended the Fest, the first of its kind in the state.
  3. A workshop on Photo journalism was organised by the dept jointly with the Alumni Association at Trivandrum in August.
  4. In this year the dept published four issues of its two journals — ‘Univ Voice’ and ‘Kalari’ .The dept has been publishing these journals for more than thirty years.
  5. A seminar on ‘Agro —journalism’ organised by the dept at Trivandrum witnessed presentations by renowned Development communicators).

10. As part of the Media Fest, a short film festival of media students was organised .The programme had entries from students in the universities in Kerala and other South Indian states.

11. Dr. Subash Kuttan was nominated as a member of the Editorial Board of the international journal on media studies, Communication and Journalism Research (CJR).

12. Dr. Subash Kuttan published research articles in ‘Science Communicator’, bought out by Centre for Science Communication, CUSAT.

13. Research article on Mass media credibility was published by Dr. Subash Kuttan in the media research journal of University of Calicut.

14. First semester MCJ students were selected to work in the Media Centre of International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK 2012) in December.

15. The dept bought out the special issue of ‘Spot Light’ as part of IFFK 2012 organised by the Govt. of Kerala.

16. Ten students of the dept participated in the state wide Media workshop at Calicut in November, organised by Youth Welfare Board.

  1. Ten students participated in the youth journalism workshop held at Kochi, under the auspices of the State Youth Welfare Board.
  2. Fourteen students worked in the media centre and the compeering section of the 16th IFFK held in Trivandrum.
  3. Four students managed the media centre of the fifth Trivandrum Bok Fest organized by the Balasahitya Institute.
  4. The media centre of Keralotsavam 2011 is run by four students.
  5. Two students assisted the news unit of Doordarshan during the last assembly elections.
  6. Ten students participated in the poll survey conducted by Centre for Forecasting and Research.
  7. Ten students under the guidance of guest lecturer Sudheer Shah Salam produced a documentary for the Interuniversity Centre for Bio informatics.
  8. Three former students of the Department-Dr. Babu Gopalakrishnan, who has been appointed Director of C-DIT, Sr. Biju Mathew of All India Radio, who won ABU Prize for Best Radio Documentary and Smt. K. A. Beena, Field Publicity Officer, who won a national award for scripting a radio documentary - were felicitated at a meeting in the Department on 17th August.
  9. 12 Media practitioners and scholars delivered guest lecturers in the Department in 2011.

  2. Chaired a session on community radio in a national seminar on Grass root Level Communication, held at MS University, Tirunelveli on 26 February.
  3. Delivered a talk on development communication at MASCOM, Malayala Manorama, Kottayam on 10 March.
  4. Participated as moderator in a two-part television discussion on Dr. Ambedkar and his ideologies in Doordarshan, Trivandrum on 12 April.
  5. Participated as a media expert in a six-hour-Tong live reportage of the announcement of results of the elections to the 13th Kerala Legislative Assembly & phone interviews with leaders from the AIR station, Trivandrum on 13 May.
  6. Conducted one-day workshop on Radio News in Kannur University on 1st June.
  7. Jaihind TV broadcast done an interview with Sri. M. Vijayakumar on 12 December, highlighting the changing trends in media.
  8. Participated as a subject expert in a seminar on the new Choice Based Semester System at the PG Level, organized by the School Communication & Publishing, MG University, Kottayam on 21 December.
  9. Presented a live discussion programme with the compare and callers on” journalism and social media” in the one-hour live phone-in programme, “Veettuvishesharn” broadcast by Doordarshan on 26 December.

Other Noteworthy Events

  1. Jacob Halpern, a journalism professor from Yale University, USA is on a 5 month visit to the Department as part of a Fulbright Fellowship Programme. He is delivering lectures on narrative journalism & radio journal ism in the first and third semester classes of MCJ.
  2. For the first time in the history of the Dept a foreign student, Ms. Elizaveta Sergeevna Pogodina from Russia, is enrolled as a student of MCJ. She has been awarded a scholarship by ICCR.
  3. One guest lecturer (Sudheer Shah Salam), one DTP Operator-Cum-LAN Administrator (Renjith R.) & one Editorial Assistant (Sinila D.B.S.) have joined the Department on one -year contract.
  4. Prof. Sreenath Sreenivasan, from the Columbia School of Journalism, USA delivered a lecture on
  5. Social Media at the Senate chamber on 8 July.
  6. The renovated office and preview theatre was inaugurated by the PVC on 17 August.
  7. The preview show of 18 video documentaries produced by the second semester students was switched on by PVC on 17 August.
  8. Published three special newsletters, titled Pristine Nature, in connection with the 81St annual session of NASI and National Symposium on Sustainable Management of Biodiversity, hosted by Kerala University from 24 to 26, November.
  9. Published a 12-page multi colour tabloid magazine titled ‘UNIV VOICE SPOT LIGHT’ on 9th December in connection with the 16th International Film Festival of Kerala.

10. INDIAN JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION resumed publication on December.

11. A record number of nine issues of ‘UNIV VOICE’ and ‘KALARI’, the two lab journals of the Department, were published during this year.


2009

  1. Organized a National Media seminar on Nov 6th, in connection with the ‘National Press Day’ celebrations. Noted media personalities from newspapers and TV Channels participated in the seminar.
  2. Organized the Swadeshabhimani Rama Krishna Pillai Lecture on March 25th. Noted journalist BRP Bhaskar delivered the lecture.
    1. The Department launched its own Website on July 29th. The Vice - Chancellor Dr. A. Jayakrishnan inaugurated the website.
    2. The Department organized its first alumni meet in July. A former student of the Department and the present Director of Information & Public Relations Department, Govt. of Kerala, Mr. M. Nandakumar AS, was honoured at the function.
    3. The Department published its journal ‘Univ Vorce’.
    4. Eminent media personalities visited the Department and delivered lectures on various topics.
    5. Students of the Department worked at the Media Centre of the International Film festival held the Thiruvananthapuram.

  • Conducted a Seminar on Technical Communication in collaboration with Society for Technical Communication.
  • Organised a function on October 29th, to unveil the portrait of Prof. Maxwell Fernandez, the founder and first Head of the Department by Hon'ble Minister for Education and Culture, Sri.M.A.Baby.
  • Hedwig Bergenheim, Professor of Media Studies, Karlstad University visited the Department and delivered lectures.
  • Students of the Department worked as reporters and copy editors in the Media Centre of Kerala University Youth Festival held in February at Thiruvananthapuram and produced the news journal, 'You-Fe'.
  • Students of the Department worked as reporters and copy editors in the Media Centre of the International Seminar on Democratic and Secular Education conducted by the Govt. of Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram and produced the news journal, ' Edu Vision'.

 

2007
  • 'Communication and Media Studies', the media research journal was published under the editorship of Dr. Subash K.
  • Several senior journalists from the state and outside visited the Department and delivered lectures to the students. Prof. Akerlund, Professor of Media Studies from Sweden visited the Department and engaged classes for a few weeks.

 

2006

  • Achieved the distinction of being the first University Department of Communication to establish online connection with Press Trust of India for their news service
  • The Department produced video films professionally, making use of its audio-visual equipments.
  • Acquired advanced computer systems and software used for newspaper design and production and audio-visual communication with UGC aid.
  • Several senior journalists from the state and outside visited the Department and delivered lectures to the students.

 



2005

  • Organised a talk by internationally renowned media personality Mr. Jeff Carlnick, the former Vice- President of CNN, USA at Thiruvananthapuram.
  • Prof. Dan Akerlund and Prof. Par Lundgren (professors of Communication Studies, Sweden) visited the Department and engaged classes for two weeks.
  • The Department organised a seminar on National Press Day(November 16th) in connection with the 'Suvarna Keralam' celebrations at Senate Chamber, University of Kerala.
  • An Audio-Visual Media Lab with digital editing facilities was commissioned in the Department.

  • International Film Classics were screened in the Kerala University Campus, Karyavattom, for two days.
  • Final Year students of the Department worked for seven days at the Media Centre of the International Film Festival (IFFK) held at Thiruvananthapuram in December, they worked as copy editors and reporters of the Official Bulletin IFFK.
  • Prof. Wilmont Simon from Australia delivered a talk on 'Film Communication'.
