Welcome to the Department of Communication and Journalism

The Department of Communication and Journalism, University of Kerala is the fulfilment of a long cherished dream to start a teaching department for communication and media studies in the oldest university in Kerala.

The department was established in the year 1976, under the headship of Prof. Maxwell Fernandez and  admitted 25 students in the first batch, based on an entrance test. It was the first of its kind in the state. From the very first year of its inception, the Department had all the basic facilities to impart a meaningful training in mass communication. Under the able leadership of Prof. Maxwell Fernandez, a galaxy of senior media personalities also offered their service as visiting faculty.

Now the department offers a two year Masters Degree course in Communication and Journalism (MCJ). and  Ph.D programme in Journalism. Majority of students who have passed out of this department are working with reputed media organizations in the country and abroad.

In the phenomenal growth of Information Technology during the recent past, IHRD has set up a Information Technology Division in it's Headquarters as Thiruvananthapuram.  In a  short time frame, Information Technology Division have made its marks in the Information Technology sector in Kerala. The Government of  Kerala  has  approved  IHRD as a Total  Solution  Provider for Computerization  of   Government  Departments ( Ref: G.O.(MS) No.62/99/IT dt. 22..04..99 ). The Professionals ranges from Ph.Ds, M.Techs and MCAs to Computer Programmers, Technicians and Data Entry Operators, all aggregate to more than 1000 number.   Since the Institutions under IHRD are spread all over Kerala, Software/Hardware assistance and training- both in Software and Hardware - is readily available at all corners of Kerala.  This advantage enjoyed only by IHRD, which  makes it   the  hot favorite TSP in Kerala.

IHRD itself a non-profit motivated organization and committed towards service of the common public, IHRD mainly concentrates in Govt. Sector.  The Information Technology Division have completed several computerization projects of Govt. Departments and Public Sector companies.

The Division is also doing in house software development for various departments/ Institutions under IHRD.

IHRD is very much concerned for making quality professionals for the country. Hence they started providing its facility for final semester students for doing their projects. Application Form for Project Work can be downloaded from here.
